According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, in a report on the supply and demands of bananas up to year 2005, the Philippines is expected to continue to dominate the banana export trade, with its exports reaching about 1.3 million tons in 2005. MDAHI's expansion projects in banana production aims to address this projection. In order to complement and strengthen this goal, MDAHI has established the Marsman-Drysdale Biotech and Research Corporation (MDBRC). MDBRC's biotech facilities are intended to provide technical services and develop new technologies that will sustain high productivity and excellence in quality for MDBRC's Cavendish bananas. MDAHI's bid for global-competitiveness has encouraged MDBRC to lead the way in biotechnology and organic farming for the Philippine banana export industry. MDBRC now has the distinction of having the first biotechnology research unit in the country's banana industry. To date, MDBRC has already developed, in their own laboratories, different biological agents for the protection and nutrition of their produce. MDBRC has developed major biotechnology products for sigatoka control (BIOSEB), for soil nutrition (BIOFERTILIZER), a bio-insecticide for the control of thrips (PALTAN) and a fungus-based biological nematicide (BIOPAC). These breakthroughs from MDBRC's in-house biotechnology R&D team further enhanced their capability to grow Cavendish bananas organically. As a direct result of these new research breakthroughs, MDAHI created the first truly organic banana farm in the country: the Marsman-Drysdale Organic Farms, Inc. The technologies and innovations developed by MDBRC are now extensively used in this farm. The high demand and market value of the farm's organic bananas are clear manifestations of the prospects for the future of biotechnology in MDAHI and the Philippine agriculture industry. The MDBRC was originally a division of the Marsman Estate Plantation, Inc., which has heavily invested in its research and technology facilities. Due to the ongoing expansion projects of MDAHI, MDBRC is now a separate corporate entity. Through their multi-disciplinary resources, the R & D team will provide technical services to all of MDAHI's banana, asparagus, and mango plantations. MDBRC also has a tissue culture laboratory and nursery that has been supplying quality seedlings to all their associate sister companies, as well as outside clients. |
